Activists make a call for solidarity to Strike January 23!
A coalition of Minneapolis trade unions and community organizations is calling for a general strike on Friday, January 23, to fight ICE occupation of the Twin Cities, which includes St. Paul.
The strike seeks to force Homeland Security and ICE agents to leave the area. The Socialist Equality Party in Minneapolis is advancing the call to strike. Read their statement here.
GLC supports the initiative and invites planning for next steps. GLC’s mission is a liberation coalition. Under the cover of kicking out illegal / undocumented immigrants, Donald Trump has expanded ICE into a para-military domestic police agency operating without normal legal restraints, lawlessly.
The call for a general strike to kick ICE out of the Twin Cities is a modest demand, but it highlights ICE oppression and demands accountability for that. Holding the strike provides important organizing experience, gives people a forum for protest, and builds the network of activists. We should highlight the long history of USA empire-domination in Central America and attribute migration to those anti-egalitarian conditions.
To that end, GLC is in solidarity with Emanuel Pastreich’s stand for the presidency and his call that as a “candidate for [USA] president in the 2028 election within Green Liberty and at the Center for Truth Politics, and as an opponent of fascistic government in any form, anywhere, I give my full support to this general strike in Minneapolis.”
To get to the root, we should criticize the circumstances of generations of USA hegemony within Central American society that propped up corrupt dictators that enabled USA corporations to harvest labor and land at exploitative rates. Economic exploitation produced the conditions that led to mass migration to the USA, and that is what we need to be criticizing and fighting against.
Advancing egalitarian conditions in the home countries, instead of exploitation, would have precluded the mass exodus of immigrants.
GLC is In solidarity with labor and social and ecological and political struggles against the power elite; we call for an egalitarian society.
